This is a Neil Rosenthal Selection.

http://www.madrose.com/index.php/italy/tuscany/montevertine

Montevertine is situated in the heart of the Chianti district about halfway between Florence
and Siena, specifically 3 kilometers or so south of Radda in Chianti. Documents attest to the fact
that the hilltop hamlet of Montevertine was first inhabited in the 11th century as a rural defensive
fortress. There are traces of the original construction on the site today. Sergio Manetti acquired
Montevertine in 1967 as a vacation home for his family. Once there, Signor Manetti planted two
hectares of vineyards and built a small cantina with the idea of producing some wine for family and
friends. The first vintage produced and bottled under the supervision of Signor Manetti was 1971
and was received with great praise for its quality. Shortly thereafter, Signor Manetti abandoned his
principal activity to devote himself to producing wine at his magnificent estate.

Having recognized the importance of the Sangiovese grape, Signor Manetti crafted his wines
with an almost exclusive reliance on that grape variety. By 1981, due to Signor Manetti’s refusal
to incorporate Trebbiano into the Montevertine blend, Montevertine left the Chianti Classico
consortium, thereby forgoing the Chianti Classico denomination. In time the consortium recognized
the wisdom of Manetti’s stance but Montevertine remains outside the consortium, simply labeling
its wines “Rosso di Toscana”. Because of these circumstances, Montevertine is frequently, but
erroneously, included in the category of “super-Tuscan” wine. In fact, Montevertine’s policy
of strict reliance on Sangiovese with a small complement of Colorino and Canaiolo is in direct
contradiction to the approach of the “super-Tuscan” group of wines which purposely include non-
local grape varieties like Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah and Merlot in their blends. Despite the formal
lack of the appellation, Montevertine is one of the rare examples of a true Chianti Classico.

The Montevertine estate is now in the hands of Martino Manetti, son of Sergio, who remains
dedicated to the style and philosophy of his father. Martino continues to utilize the wise counsel of
Bruno Bini, who was born at Montevertine and whose depth of knowledge of the climate and soil of
this unique and formidable estate is unparalleled.

The estate sits at an elevation of 425 meters. There are 18 hectares of vineyards at Montevertine,

90% of which are planted to the Sangiovese grape with the remaining vineyards dedicated to
Colorino and Canaiolo. The vineyards are divided into nine separate parcels with the oldest vines
planted in the Pergole Torte vineyard in 1968. After a manual harvest, the wines are fermented in
large (150hl) cement cuves for at least 25 days. The wine is pumped over and the cap submerged
daily to create optimum conditions for a long and slow extraction. The malolactic fermentation also
occurs in large volume cement cuves before it is racked into Slavonian oak barrels that range in size
from 5 ½ to 18 hectoliters capacity. The Pergole Torte is ultimately racked into smaller French
(Alliers) oak barrels for final six months of its elevage.

https://www.madrose.com/index.php/france/cotes-du-rhone-north/bernard-levet

Nicole Levet’s grandfather first purchased vineyards in Ampuis in 1936 and began making wine
immediately thereafter. Initially, he delivered his Cote Rotie in barrels to the city of St. Etienne
where he sold it to bistros and cafes for consumption by the miners of that city. In 1966, Nicole’s
father, Marius Chambeyron, began to bottle a small portion of the production of the estate. I
first encountered Marius Chambeyron in 1982 as I prospected in the region. He was a proud and
somewhat brazen man who, despite the tiny size of his estate, proudly painted his name on the rocks
that fronted the terraces of his small swath of vineyards as in the manner of the seigneurs of the
appellation like Guigal, Delas and Vidal-Fleury. As we were preparing to begin our commercial
relationship, Monsieur Chambeyron took ill and we never had the opportunity to bring his wines to
the States.

Fortunately, his daughter, Nicole, and her husband, Bernard Levet, were prepared to continue
Chambeyron’s life’s work. It was with the formidable 1983 vintage that Bernard Levet took over
the wine production as well as the management of the vineyard with Nicole. This exceptional
couple has now been responsible for the development of the domaine, increasing the vineyard
holdings and expanding the cellar capacity so that they can now bottle their entire production.
Nicole and Bernard have now been joined by their daughter, Agnes, who has inherited the love for

vineyard work and obsession with detail that are essential parts of her parents’ character.

The Domaine’s current total production is 12,000 to 15,000 bottles annually and is exclusively of
the appellation of Cote Rotie. We can proudly say that we have imported the wines of this domaine
since that fabled 1983 vintage, never missing a vintage and eagerly accepting our annual allocation.

The domaine consists of 3.5 hectares of vineyards, all of which are located within the boundaries
of the town of Ampuis and are entitled to the Cote Rotie appellation. The vineyards are all steeply
terraced and must be worked and harvested manually. In my entire experience, I have encountered
no one who takes better care nor manages a vineyard with the talent of the Levet family.

The grapes are generally not destemmed before passing through a pneumatic press. The primary
fermentation takes place in epoxy lined cuves. There is a long maceration and the cuvaison
lasts three weeks. The fermentation temperatures reach 30 degrees centigrade. The malolactic
fermentation normally finishes by the end of the year. The wine is then racked into large oak barrels
where it spends the remainder of its first year. At the beginning of the second year, the wines are
racked into medium-sized barrels (“demi-muid”) 10 – 15% of which are new. In the third year, the
wines are racked again and left to complete the barrel aging in a mixture of “demi-muid” and small
barrels. The wines are bottled after three years of barrel aging with a light fining and no filtration.

https://www.madrose.com/index.php/france/provence/domaine-du-bagnol

Our love affair with this magnificent seven-hectare estate, situated a short walk from the center
of the Mediterranean village of Cassis, began in the early 1980s when we first met Claire Lefevre, a
vigneronne of great class and character. This was our introduction to an appellation with an ancient
history and a magical atmosphere.

Cassis was first planted to the vine in the 12th century and the vineyards were developed on

the north, east and southeast slopes that surround the village which sits immediately on a little bay
on the Mediterranean; thus, the perfect circumstances for marrying wine to the bounty of the sea!
Phylloxera wiped out the vineyards in 1870 but by 1892 the citizens of Cassis had re-established
their vineyards but this time without the Muscatel variety.

We worked together with Madame Lefevre from the early 1980s through the early 1990s when
she passed away having reached her mid ‘80s and having generously immersed us in the culture of
this small, charming and terribly chic fishing village. We were despondent for losing a good friend
but equally saddened because none of her immediate family had the time or the energy to follow
in her footsteps. So, the Domaine du Bagnol staggered through a few vintages and eventually was
sold.

That, in fact, was a stroke of good fortune for us as we eventually made the acquaintance of the
new owner, Jean-Louis Genovesi, a native of Cassis who had departed for Paris and made his fame
(and a few centimes as well) in the capital. Jean-Louis and his son, Sébastien, have revived the
domaine and the wines, both blanc and rosé, are more compelling than ever. The domaine sits just
beneath the imposing limestone outcropping of Cap Canaille and is a mere 200 meters distance from
the shores of the Mediterranean. Thus situated, the Domaine du Bagnol is the beneficiary of the
cooling winds from the north, northwest and northeast (Tramontane, Mistral and grégal) as well as
the gentle sea breezes that come ashore.

This is a Rosenthal Wine Merchant selection. Rosenthal wines are only available in Colorado through Natural Wine Company.

The name of the estate is the first indication of its long, illustrious past. Located in the heart
of Provence, near routes traveled by Crusaders in the early Middle Ages, the Commanderie de
Peyrassol was founded by the Knights of Templar who were dedicated to protecting the Crusaders
en route to, and in, the Holy Land. The first recorded harvest took place in 1256 and winemaking
has continued uninterrupted throughout the centuries. When the Templars were brought down
in 1311 by the King of France, who was nervous of their power and jealous of their wealth, the
Knights of Malta became the fortunate owners of the Commanderie. They remained in control,
flawlessly maintaining the vineyards until the French Revolution, when it was taken over by the
State.

The Rigord family purchased the estate in 1870; but, it was not until 1977 when Francoise

Rigord, wife of Yves, decided to bottle and market the wines of the estate. Madame Rigord
abandoned her successful career in public relations to study oenology and take on the responsibility
of making all of Commanderie de Peyrassol’s wines. The first vintage bottled for sale to the public
was1981. It was then, at the very outset of this commercial venture, that we met Francoise and we
have worked in happy harmony together since that time.

Francoise continued to produce ground-breaking wines for the next two decades, elevating the
reputation of the Cotes de Provence in all three colors: white, red and rosé. Her book, “La Dame de
Peyrassol”, relating her experiences as one of the rare women in the forefront of the wine trade has
received enthusiastic praise.

In 2001, the Rigord family sold the property to Philippe Austruy who has aggressively invested
in this exceptional property, modernizing the cellars and expanding the holdings. His nephew,
Alban Cacaret, is responsible for the daily operations of the domaine.

The “Commanderie”, now known as Chateau Peyrassol, is located in the hills of the “arriére
pays”, or backcountry, of the Var, north of St. Tropez and Hyères between the villages of Le
Luc and Flassans-sur-Issole. The estate controls 850 hectares and is surrounded by 165 hectares
of Mediterranean forest. Eighty (80) hectares are planted to vineyards which are cultivated on
dry, rocky clay and limestone based soil. When Francoise Rigord took over, Syrah and Cabernet
Sauvignon were added to the Grenache and Cinsault already grown at the estate. The Rolle (a/k/
a Vermentino) and Ugni Blanc are the principal white grape varieties, supplemented by Semillon
and Clairette. Peyrassol is rigorously maintained pursuant to organic principles in full respect of
the surrounding environment and the delicate balance of the local Mediterranean ecosystem. No
synthetic fertilizers or pesticides or fungicides are used in the vineyards. Organic foliar sprays
are used to help prevent chlorosis (nutrient deficiencies) and sheep manure is the only fertilizer
used after the planting. The age of the vines, the rocky terrain, and the hot, dry climate establish
conditions that severely restrict yields. As a consequence, harvest levels average between 25 and 40
hectoliters per hectare depending on the vineyard and grape variety.

Although there are many different cuvées produced currently at Peyrassol, we concentrate on
several “core” bottlings that, for us, represent the terroir of this zone in the Var in its truest form.

This historic estate, situated in the hills just south of Aix-en-Provence, has been in the hands of

the Rougier family for two centuries and holds a virtual monopoly on the appellation of Palette. I
have admired the wines of Château Simone and have followed the evolution of this domaine over
the years. Now, many years after my initial introduction (1981) to the Rougiers, we have been asked
to marry our work to theirs. It is our privilege to do so.

Château Simone encompasses twenty hectares of vineyards that sit on limestone soils at
elevations between 500 and 750 feet above sea level on the slopes of Montaiguet. The special
microclimate of this appellation is influenced by the encircling pine forests, the mass of Mont
Sainte-Victoire, and the Arc River. The vineyards were reconstituted after the invasion of phylloxera
and many vines are over a century old. The Rougiers maintain the particular vinification methods
developed and cherished over many decades. For those of you who are not familiar with these
wines, whether rouge, blanc or rosé, we believe you will find them to be compelling and unique.

All of the grapes are hand harvested, destemmed, lightly pressed and fermented for 15 to 20
days in small wooden vats with only wild yeast, then put into small foudre to rest on the lees. The
white is predominantly Clairette, with small amounts of Grenache Blanc and Ugni Blanc, and a
dash of Bourboulenc, Muscat Blanc, Picpoul, Furmint and Sémillon. Fermentation takes place at a
relatively warm 68 degrees and aged for one year in 20–30 hl casks then one year in older barrels.
The red from Simone is an elegant yet well-constituted wine of great depth. It is primarily composed
of Grenache and Mourvèdre but its special character reflects the presence of a mélange other grape
varieties, albeit in small proportion, including Cinsault, Syrah, Carignan, Cabernet Sauvignon,
Castet, Manosquin, Théoulier, Tibouren, Picpoul Noir and Muscat de Hambourg. (The rosé is the
exact same blend) Bottled after 18–24 months of aging in foudres and one year or more in aged
barrique, it is assembled without filtration. The wine is a classic that deserves to be aged in order
to best appreciate its many nuances: plum, pine resin, cinnamon, truffle and spice among other
sensations. We invite you to share our pleasure.

In 1970, when there was a great exodus from the Languedoc due to a loss of faith in its vineyards
to provide a sufficient living, Jean-Pierre Jullien named his domaine “Cal Demoura”, which in
Occitan means “one must remain”. He came from a long line of vignerons and, at that time, he
followed most of his colleagues as they closed their caves and attempted to survive by participating
in the local cooperative. Jean-Pierre’s son, Olivier, refused to follow the path of the cooperative
and established his own domaine, the “Mas Jullien”, in 1985. Jean-Pierre, in a reversal of the usual
process, took the example of his son, resigned from the cooperative and recreated his own estate
in 1993. He sold off a portion of his vineyards and retained only the best 5 hectares. With these,
he began making a wine of regal dimensions that helped to lead the qualitative revolution in the
Languedoc. In 2004, Jean-Pierre retired, selling the estate to its current owners, Isabelle and Vincent
Goumard. Seduced by the estate’s winemaking philosophy, as well as by the potential of its terroir,

this young couple, having studied oenology in Dijon, spent a year working side by side with Jean-
Pierre in the vineyard and in the cellar, before taking full control of the estate. Having worked with
Jean-Pierre Jullien for the entirety of his career as producer and now having worked with Isabelle
and Vincent from the very outset of theirs, we can happily attest to the fact that this transition, from
Jullien to Goumard, is one of the most felicitous in our experience.

The estate now encompasses eleven hectares of vineyards located in the village of Jonquières and
in the neighboring community of Saint Felix, approximately 45 minutes (30 kilometers) northwest
of Montpellier, just south of Clermont l’Hérault. They are situated in the heart of the Terrasses du
Larzac, an independent subdivision within the Coteaux du Languedoc AOC that was recognized in
2004 for its distinctive ability to render wines of exceptional balance and depth due to the special
micro-climate in which it is located. The vineyards feature five red grape varieties in approximately
equal parts: Grenache, Mourvedre, Syrah, Carignan and Cinsault. A small group of parcels are
planted to a half-dozen white varieties (Chenin Blanc, Grenache Blanc, Roussanne, Viognier,
Muscat and Petit Manseng) to produce a rather remarkable Vin de Pays de l’Herault Blanc. The
average age of the vines is 30 years (as of 2010) with significant parcels of Grenache, Cinsault and
Carignan being considerably older. The soil is very dry and stony with a deep but porous topsoil.
The various parcels of the domaine are distributed over a terroir that is both geographically and
climatically diverse. These variations, combined with an assortment of different cépages, result
in wines of complexity and finesse. The Terrasses du Larzac also benefits from the cooling winds
that come both from the Mediterranean (to the south) and from the mountains to the north of
Monpeyroux. This results in a long growing season that preserves essential acidity and yields juice
of high complexity.

Isabelle and Vincent are committed to producing wines that respect the environment from which
they come, and express both their terroir, and the personality of the winemaker. In the vineyard, the
Goumards treat organically and harvest manually. Harvest levels are approximately 30 hectoliters
per hectare and sometimes considerably less. There is a double selection done at harvest to secure
only the ripest, healthiest grapes, once in the vineyard and a second time in the chai before pressing.

In the cellar, they practice a classic vinification. Each grape variety is harvested and vinified
separately. The initial fermentation occurs in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats and
in December the wines are then racked into barrel (mostly of the demi-muid size [500 liters]
supplemented with small barrique). After one year of aging, a selection is made and the assemblage
is determined. The wines then are given an extra six months to find their identity before being
bottled without fining or filtration. Production is approximately 40,000 bottles per year.
